In the Lonely Hour, out May 26th on Capitol, blends R&B with elements of classic pop, gospel (as evidenced on “Stay With Me”) and even country Rolling Stone calls one the LP one of the 27 must-hear albums of the spring. Speaking directly about the album’s bummed-out title, Smith told the magazine, “I deal with all the different aspects of loneliness. Smith truly broke out in 2012 with his vocals on Disclosure’s “Latch,” and ever since, the anticipation has been building for his own debut. Reveals His True Identity in ‘SNL’ Promos In the new clip, Smith wanders the streets of London after an evening of love-gone-wrong. “Guess it’s true, I’m not good at a one-night stand,” he belts on the track over gospel piano, miming the lyrics to the camera, “But I still need love ’cause I’m just a man.” The song builds from that quiet melancholy to a resilient chorus, and the video gets equally cathartic as Smith stumbles upon a massive choir in a nondescript church beaming with light. In December 2013, they were nominated for the 2014 Brit Critics Choice Award and the BBCs Sound of 2014 poll, winning both.
